Use the seed parameter for testing and experimenting: --seed

What are Seeds?

Seeds are the initial spark that sets your Midjourney image in motion. Think of a seed as the random noise you see on a TV screen—it’s the first step before your image comes to life. When you use seeds, you can lock in a specific starting point. You can lock a seed by plugging in a whole number between 0 and 4294967295 in your prompt. If you don’t choose a seed, Midjourney will use a new random one every time, giving you a variety of outcomes.

Best Practices

thumb-up-icon.svg Experimenting & Testing: Lock a seed when testing different elements in your prompts. It’s like having a control in an experiment. This makes it easier to see how changes in your prompt affect the result. thumb-down-icon.svg Not for Saving Styles: Seeds can’t capture or bookmark a specific style, character, or appearance across different prompts. They only influence the initial layout of noise that begins the rendering process. For consistency in your images, we recommend style references, omni references, and personalization. thumb-down-icon.svg Not Always Predictable: Seeds may behave unexpectedly, so they shouldn’t be relied on for the same results over different prompting sessions. Assume that if you take a break and come back later, your seed may no longer work as expected. thumb-down-icon.svg Not Always Consistent: While seeds can help with consistency, they have the least impact on the final image. Factors like your prompt, model version, and even slight parameter or settings changes can lead to unexpected results. thumb-down-icon.svg Not for Use in Turbo Mode: Don’t use Turbo mode when using seeds. Turbo mode focuses on speed, and as a result seed locking is not reliable.

Using Seeds

Finding Image Seeds

Start by clicking on any image you’ve made on your Create or Organize page. This will open the image, revealing more options. Use the options options-icon.svg button near your prompt text and click Copy and then click Seed. This will copy the image’s seed number to your clipboard. web-find-seed.png After your image is generated, click Add Reaction and select the envelope ✉️ emoji. Make sure to select the plain envelope emoji. If you’re having trouble finding it, you can use the search bar at the top of the emoji window. discord-emoji-react.png The Midjourney Bot will then send you a Direct Message with the seed number. If you do not receive a direct message, make sure to check your Privacy Settings for the Midjourney Discord server and confirm that “Direct Messages” is toggled on to allow the Midjourney Bot to send you a direct message.
